A644 Huddersfield Rd

Scheme Outline: Design and installation of Soil Nail solution to falling retaining wall. Injection of grout into structure. Only part time lane closure (9.00am to 3.30pm) due to busy 40mph road, main road necessitated a quick and environmentally friendly solution to repair the wall.

Client: Kirklees Metropolitan Council.

Value: £225,000

Additional Details:

  • Structural retaining walls are not new; they have been around since building began.  However because of the age of some of these structures there is a need for substantial repair.
  • One such wall is located on a busy arterial route into a major conurbation. Pre-Victorian, the wall not only had a functional service but as with all such structures an aesthetic quality worth preserving.
  • Faced with this challenge the options were to demolish and rebuild the wall or strengthen in-situ. The latter was chosen as the most cost effective and least disruptive method.
  • The use of soil nailing and ground anchors meant that the strength of the wall was vastly increased.  The system also caused minimal disruption to traffic and residents at the same time resulting in maintaining the historical appearance.
