And the winner is…….Hewlett!
This week Leeds-based Hewlett Civil Engineering walked away with the right to list itself among the best employers in the industry after winning one of Contract Journal's prestigious Best Places to Work in Construction Awards.
Following a rigorous judging process of 1,000’s of employee questionnaires entered by a prolific number of civil engineering firm’s from across the UK, the results were finally announced during the official awards ceremony on the 18th June at Lords Cricket Ground in London.
Says Alan Cooper, Managing Director at Hewlett: “The Contract Journal Best Places to Work in Construction Awards are the industry’s leading Awards for forward-thinking companies. We are extremely proud to come top in the Best Civil Engineering Contractor category!
“These unique awards aren’t judged by a panel of experts – they’re judged by our own employees, and that’s what makes them such a powerful measure of our success. Our staff filled out an in-depth satisfaction survey which has not only been successful for us in scooping this award but will be of use when it comes to assessing how we can continue to improve the working environment at Hewlett.
“Winning an award such as this one sets Hewlett apart as an employer of choice, which is ever more important in this day and age as it can have a major impact on our ability to recruit and retain staff, and in turn our bottom line.
“Our staff are paramount to the continued success of the company and as such we endeavour to provide all our employees with a positive working environment, with an emphasis on a good work/life balance as well as offering opportunities for continued personal development.”
The Awards – now in their fourth year, and sponsored by ConstructionSkills and Hays Construction – are a benchmark in the industry. They’re open to any firm involved in the construction industry, from the biggest to the very smallest contractor, and from consultants to product manufacturers.
Hewlett was also short-listed for the ‘Best Year-on Year Improvement’ category.
Located within the commercial complex at Thorpe Park, Hewlett is one of Yorkshire’s foremost privately owned multi-disciplinary group of companies whose principle activities comprise civil engineering, building infrastructure, the hire of plant and machinery and commercial property development.
It's only 21 years ago that Hewlett was founded - a typical start-up for a civil engineering contractor - a few men and a couple of JCBs! Now with a directly employed workforce of over 500, its own training school and a newly launched Central office based in Warwick, Hewlett is quite different from some of its competitors.
