‘Fuel’ for thought….Hewlett start work on new contract in Plymouth
Hewlett Civil Engineering has started work this week on a major development programme at a fuel storage facility in Plymouth.
Working in conjunction with PROjEN PLC - a progressive, multi-disciplined project management company – and on behalf of GreenergyTerminals Ltd, Hewlett will be constructing new bund walls, 2.5 metres high, in reinforced concrete and brickwork and upgrading the existing containment bunds from earth to concrete in order for the aged fuel storage tanks to be replaced with larger, more modern and safer ones.
The bunds will be designed to hold the tanks' fuel contents if they fail. They would also have a 10% margin for water used in fire fighting.
The installation of an impermeable membrane underneath the tanks to prevent leakage of fuel into the ground will also fortify environmental protection.
Alan Cooper, Managing Director for Hewlett said: “Hewlett won this challenging commission on a mixture of price and quality of the tender, securing the work after bidding against other competitors. The work will draw upon the expertise and experience of our staff.
"Winning this work demonstrates that as a company we are retaining our competitive edge, despite these trying times. We are building on existing relationships and continuing to secure sustainable, long term commissions. We will now begin to work closely with PROjEN PLC to ensure that this programme is delivered on time to meet client requirements."
Hewlett’s contract is worth approximately £600,000. Duration: 16 weeks.
The Mayflower terminal was acquired in June 2008 by Greenergy, and forms part of Greenergy's ongoing investment programme in developing a modern and sophisticated fuel supply infrastructure across the UK.
The upgrade of onsite infrastructure will see the capacity of the terminal almost double whilst also providing improvements in reliability and efficiency. This will deliver significant service and cost benefits to the South West of England, an area historically subject to under supply and correspondingly high fuel prices. The investment will also facilitate the roll-out of Tesco 99 Octane petrol in the South West.
