Hewlett appointed partnering contractor for Bradford school construction work
Leeds-based Hewlett Civil Engineering has recently been employed by H&J Martin Limited to deliver construction services at Appleton Academy in Wyke, Bradford as part of the overall building work which will bring together the primary and secondary provision of the academy.
Hewlett’s work has just commenced on site with overall completion programmed for December 2011. The contract is worth in excess of £2.5million and involves foundations, retaining walls, drainage works, road construction and external works for the construction of the new school building plus the formation of sports pitches and mountain bike/BMX tracks.
The creation of the Appleton Academy has replaced Wyke Manor School and High Fernley Primary School with a new 3 -16 all-through Academy, providing an exciting and inspirational learning environment. The new school opened in existing buildings in 2009 and will move into its new accommodation by September 2011.
Appleton Academy is sponsored by Bradford College and takes its name from Nobel Prize winning Bradford physicist Sir Edward Appleton.
Managing Director Alan Cooper said: "The academy will be a tremendous asset for the area and it is very rewarding to be responsible for delivering projects such as this that will benefit not just the pupils themselves but also many members of the local community. In these challenging times it is significant that we continue to win contracts; we believe that our selection for the contract results from our extensive understanding of the operational requirements and budget constraints involved, and demonstrates our ability to carry out high-quality projects within these parameters.”
Hewlett employs over 400 staff and bases its head office at Thorpe Park in Leeds.
