Hewlett awarded contract at Widnes Waterfront
Hewlett Civil Engineering has been awarded a contract by developer Stadium (Widnes) Ltd to commence work at the Widnes Waterfront regeneration development.
Formally an Economic Development Zone, the Widnes Waterfront is a multi-million pound regeneration programme driving the transformation of over 360 acres of former industrial land on the banks of the River Mersey.
Hewlett’s nine week package of works is essentially a sewer diversion necessary in order to free up land for future development. Scope of works consists of constructing a new 3000mm dia manhole on an existing 1800mm culvert and installing approximately 80m of pipe to existing manholes in order to divert existing drainage.
The work Hewlett will be carrying out involves closing the road whilst maintaining access to the service yards of Morrisons, Wilkinsons and other businesses nearby. Traffic management arrangements have been agreed with the stores involved and Halton Borough Council.
The Widnes Waterfront programme has benefited from £6.2million European Regional Development Funding, £5.1 million from the Northwest Development Agency and approximately £3.5 million of Halton Strategic Partnership and Halton Borough Council funds.
Over the programme lifetime, it is anticipated over £70 million of investment will be brought into the area, transforming it into a commercial and tourism development site of regional significance in a stunning riverside setting.
A spokesperson for Hewlett said: “The Widnes Waterfront development is really starting to take shape now. Work on-site is advancing well and local people are getting a much greater sense of what the scheme will bring to the area. It represents a big investment in Widnes and we are happy to be part of such an exciting project.”
Hewlett currently employs over 400 staff and bases its head office at Thorpe Park in Leeds. 2010 saw the opening of a new office in Perth, Scotland, a training centre in Wolverhampton and further investment in training.
