Hewlett joins the ‘Working well together’ campaign to help reduce death and injury in construction.
Every year thousands of construction workers in the UK are killed, injured or have their health damaged. Hewlett Civil Engineering in Leeds has recently joined the ‘Working Well Together’ (WWT) campaign which aims to improve health and safety in the construction industry, particularly in small and micro businesses to offer its expert advice and share its good practice.
As a market leading, privately owned Civil Engineering contractor, with a large directly employed work force, health and safety is an integral part of Hewlett’s daily business and the company is actively committed to eradicating the incidence of accidents by continuous development, monitoring and training.
At a recent event held at Leeds College of Building aimed at self-employed builders and the owners of small building firms, Hewlett - as a representative from the WWT Group - presented a ‘hands-on’ safety and health awareness experience to over 200 attendees from across the region which offered guidance on the safe use of excavator Quick Hitch devices.
Comments Steve Vickers, Training Manager at Hewlett: “Our zero tolerance approach to health and safety has over the years improved our reputation with clients, regulators and our own employees. On the back of this we were keen to get involved with the WWT campaign and share our good practice.
“Over the past few years the safe use of Quick-hitches has become something of a health & safety "hot potato". There have been several workplace accidents and sadly quite a few deaths relating to the use of quick-hitches. This has led to increasing concern for the health & safety of workers who work with, or near to, plant and equipment that use these kind of devices.
“The aim of the ‘Working well together’ event at Leeds College of Building was to educate and inform on this subject via a practical approach which allowed those attending to demonstrate their competence on the different types of hitch.
“We were keen for this not to be a bit like teaching ones grandmother to suck eggs and I am sure it was probably a good thing for all concerned. I personally hope it will make those operators who have a "boy racer" attitude to slow down and think about the consequences of their actions in the future.”
Hewlett directly employs a dedicated Health & Safety team; comprising of a full time Safety & Environmental Officer, Health & Safety managers, advisors and administrators all of whom are headed up by our Director of Health & Safety.
To maintain high standards, all managers and members of staff undergo regular health & safety courses. All Hewlett operatives are CSCS accredited and in addition all plant operators are CPCS accredited.
