Hewlett making York railway station ‘bike-friendly’
The worlds of cycling and rail are soon due to get on better at York Railway Station thanks to Hewlett Rail who has been employed as Principle Contractor by East Coast to create two new cycle routes at the station, making access for cyclists more convenient.
The routes will be created as part of a £550,000 investment to improve facilities at the station which is managed by train operator East Coast.
The construction of cycle access ramps to the north and south of the station started this week and is due to complete in 11 weeks.
The work involves constructing two access ramps consisting of reinforced concrete foundations, brick and block walls, with a concrete ramp surface with steel guardrails. Electronic automated security gates will protect the ramps out of hours, and the new ramps will provide a direct link to the City’s extensive cycle tracks.
The northern ramp will lead into the short stay car park from Leeman Road and fulfils a long-held aspiration of York’s cyclists that the station be linked up to the path next to the Royal Mail depot that leads to the river.
Access to the south will be from Lowther Terrace and into the long stay car park. Additional CCTV cameras and lights are being introduced to cover the new access points.
Alan Cooper, Managing Director at Hewlett comments: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with the City of York Council, Cycling City York and Network Rail on these station improvements which will benefit passengers and staff alike.
"More and more people are turning to cycling as a healthy, green and convenient way to travel. These improvements will hopefully help to encourage more people to start and finish their journey to and from the station by bicycle.”
The new access points at York station will be a welcome addition to the range of facilities and infrastructure available to cyclists in York, and will also benefit pedestrians and disabled people. They will make it quicker, easier and safer for people to reach the station.
