Hewlett offering helping hand to unemployed
Young unemployed adults in Leeds aged between 18 and 24 years are being given the chance to take their first step into construction, thanks to a little help from Hewlett Civil Engineering.
The award-winning company, which has its head office at Thorpe Park in Leeds, is working with Leeds Ahead to offer the employment opportunities for two people as part of a Jobs scheme, led locally by Leeds City Council.
Leeds Ahead, which is a partner in the Scheme and plays a vital role in helping companies to get involved in the city’s social and economic regeneration, will help Hewlett to source suitable candidates, who will gain 'real life', and gain experience for paid work for a period of six months with one of the region’s largest civil engineering employers.
Providing a valuable insight into the construction industry the objective is to build confidence and ultimately support young people towards full-time employment.
In addition to joining forces with Leeds Ahead, Hewlett will also be working closely with the Health and Safety Executive and local schools to raise awareness of construction and promote civil engineering as a future career choice.
Comments Alan Cooper, Managing Director: "Our work with the Leeds Ahead to support this initiative is a great way of working within the community and supporting the economic regeneration of the city.
"By offering young people paid work we hope to improve their working opportunities. Working with us gives them the chance to develop skills in the workplace and get a real feel for the job. It will put them in a stronger position to find future work."
Established in Leeds in 1987, Hewlett has progressively developed and expanded its activities from its head office in the city to establish itself as one of the North’s leading civil engineering contractors. It now also operates from a new office in Warwick. The Company is focused on training with its own training school based at Cross Green in Leeds providing an extensive range of training programmes for both employer and employee, and covering a wide spectrum of disciplines from telescopic forklift training to safety and managerial courses.
The training facility, set on a 10-acre site, is the largest construction training area in Yorkshire, offering varied terrains and conditions to carry out instruction and assessments. It reflects 'live' site conditions, and is unique in its provision of the CITB touch screen tests on the premises. In addition, the modern classroom facilities provide an excellent environment for presentation and study for the new theory tests.
The training division is ConstructionSkills, City and Guilds, LANTRA and EDEXCEL accredited.
