Hewlett to host Safety & Health Awareness Day.
Hewlett Civil Engineering is to host a Safety & Health Awareness Day (SHAD) on March 14th at its Cross Green Training Centre in Leeds aimed at improving safety within the civil engineering sector of the construction industry.
As part of the Health and Safety (HSE) UK-wide Working Well Together campaign, Hewlett will be joining together with other large firms in the construction industry to drive home some life-saving messages about health and safety to smaller building, or contracting, companies and self-employed workers.
The free event is expected to attract over 120 delegates from around the region seeking practical advice on how to comply with their health and safety responsibilities.
Comments Hewlett Training Manager, Steve Vickers: “As a company we work hard to keep our workers safe and drive down accident rates so it makes perfect sense that we share our best practice with our industry peers.
“We feel we have a responsibility to encourage others to adopt a similar attitude and the Working Well Together campaign is ideal in this as it focuses on those in the industry who are hardest to reach.”
Along with hosting the event at its purpose-built training centre, Hewlett will be demonstrating the risks associated with deep excavations. Using their years of experience to familiarise delegates with some of the most frequent causes of accidents Hewlett will work through common sense solutions that could prevent them from happening.
Continues Steve Vickers: “Every year, people are killed or seriously injured when working in excavations. Excavation work has to be properly planned, managed, supervised and carried out to prevent accidents. Many injuries are entirely preventable and there are straightforward and sensible steps that businesses can take to manage the risks people face in their day-to-day work.”
As a market leading, privately owned Civil Engineering contractor, with a large directly employed work force, health and safety is an integral part of Hewlett’s daily business and the company is actively committed to eradicating the incidence of accidents by continuous development, monitoring and training.
Concludes Steve Vickers: “Our zero tolerance approach to health and safety has over the years improved our reputation with clients, regulators and our own employees. We invited HSE to hold the SHAD at our training centre as it provides the perfect construction setting for such an event.”
The 10-acre training facility is the largest construction training area in Yorkshire, offering varied terrains and conditions to carry out instruction and assessments. It reflects 'live’ site conditions and is ConstructionSkills, City and Guilds, LANTRA and EDEXCEL accredited.
Other companies involved in the SHAD day are Crossways Scaffolding, SpanSet Ltd, NetsWork Ltd and Speedy Hire.
Hewlett directly employs a dedicated Health & Safety team; comprising of a full time Safety & Environmental Officer, Health & Safety managers, advisors and administrators all of whom are headed up by our Director of Health & Safety.
To maintain high standards, all managers and members of staff undergo regular health & safety courses. All Hewlett operatives are CSCS accredited and in addition all plant operators are CPCS accredited.
